OLIVE

The Olive is a ground-up accessory dwelling unit in Monrovia, CA, that reimagines the traditional cabin aesthetic through a bold, contemporary lens. Shaped around architectural clarity and efficiency, the project introduces a highly functional residential retreat to an existing lot, prioritizing a refined street presence that feels both modern and scaled to its neighborhood context.

The dwelling’s design utilizes a craftsman-style program, breaking down the volume into readable components that emphasize a simple yet sophisticated form. A restrained material palette is headlined by dark-stained vertical wood siding, which provides a striking contrast to the surrounding landscape while ensuring long-term durability. Strategically placed windows and openings allow natural light to penetrate deep into the living spaces, framing views of the property while maintaining a sense of privacy and retreat.

Every aspect of the cabin is organized to support modern livability and everyday comfort. The layout reflects a commitment to functional flow, providing a seamless transition between the compact interior and the outdoor environment.
